About the museum
The Ecomuseo Histórico de Benaocaz, also called “El Hombre y la Sierra” (“Man and the Sierra”), is the municipal museum and offers a journey through the relationship between people and the natural environment of the Sierra de Grazalema, from prehistory to the present. It is housed in a building in the town centre and is run by the town council.
The route begins with the first human traces in the sierra, from Palaeolithic hunters to farming and herding communities, with particular attention to the cultures that lived in caves, with well-known examples such as the Cueva de la Pileta and its rock paintings. It continues with the first historical cultures and the Roman remains of the area, such as cities, roads and public works.
Other rooms are devoted to the Islamic period, which lasted almost eight centuries and is best documented in the frontier era with the Christian kingdoms, when fortifications proliferated, and to the establishment of the seigneurial regime under the ducal house of Arcos. The route includes 18th-century maps and ends with crafts, primary activities and modern communications. The museum is complemented by other archaeological points of interest in the village, such as the Roman road and the Nasrid quarter.
