About the museum
The Museo de la Almendra was created in 2010 to mark the centenary of the company Almendras Morales S. A. and pays tribute to the family that founded it. The Morales family has been working with almonds in Zamoranos, a hamlet of Priego de Córdoba located in the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, since 1910, when José Mateo Morales Ruiz began to harvest, crack and sell the first almonds of the area. Today the company is run by the fourth generation.
The Junta de Andalucía registered the museum in the Registro de Museos de Andalucía (Andalusian Museum Register) in 2012 as a privately owned centre. It occupies two newly built buildings, and its founding collection consists mainly of machinery and utensils for processing almonds.
The visit begins in a room with the first electric machines built to crack and grade almonds, made of solid wood. It continues with a sorting bench (banco de partido), where hundreds of women from the area checked the almonds before packing, and with an exhibition of almond varieties in the shell, some of which are no longer in use. The visit is completed by an audiovisual room, a viewpoint over the olive groves and fields of Zamoranos, and a shop with local products.
