About the museum
The Museo Mares de Cedeira was created to highlight the tangible and intangible heritage linked to the sea in a town whose identity has always been tied to fishing. It was promoted by the Asociación Mares de Cedeira, with the collaboration of the Concello de Cedeira, the Fishermen’s Brotherhood (Cofradía de Pescadores) and the Diputación de A Coruña, and opened its doors for the first time in July 2016.
The collection began with the private items of a group of local residents, such as navigation instruments, fishing gear and objects related to the sea, to which donations from families and people across the town were added.
The museum displays traditional boats, fishing gear, engines, tools for harvesting goose barnacles (percebes) and cockles (berberechos), old photographs, cetacean fossils, shells and objects washed up by the sea. It is complemented by a malacology collection with specimens of molluscs from Galicia and from other parts of the world.
