About the museum
The Museo Minero de Escucha occupies the Se Verá mine, a lignite mine in the Teruel mining basins. Its exploitation began at the end of the 19th century and, until the 1940s, extraction rights belonged to a family company, the Argüelles brothers. It then passed to the national company Calvo Sotelo, which operated it until 1968, the year coal extraction ended; at its most active it employed 250 workers.
Between 1968 and 1991, Minas y Ferrocarril de Utrillas used the galleries to ventilate the nearby Pozo Pilar mine. After several years of administrative management, the mine opened to the public as a museum on 18 July 2002. It is owned by the Town Council of Escucha, which also runs it.
The visit is guided and lasts about 75 minutes. Visitors receive a helmet and lamp and descend in personnel wagons along a gallery with a 36° incline and about 200 metres in length; they then walk about 400 metres along prepared routes. Along the way there are tools from different periods and recreations of mining work with mannequins and, as the centrepiece, an open coal face that the museum presents as unique in Spain. Outside there is old mining machinery with explanatory panels and leisure areas.
