About the museum
The Museo Municipal de Alcalá la Real is municipally owned and managed and is housed in the Palacio Abacial, a building in austere Baroque style with Neoclassical additions, rebuilt in 1781. In 1995 the town council and the Junta de Andalucía began its rehabilitation to give it new cultural uses, and after four years of works the palace became the home of the museum.
Today the building also houses the Conservatorio Elemental de Música (elementary music conservatory) and a tourist office. Inside, the rectangular cloister courtyard, with three open levels, stands out.
The museum was created to exhibit, conserve and disseminate archaeological, ethnological, anthropological, palaeontological and scientific collections. Its rooms include El tesoro de Ermita Nueva, the geology room with minerals and fossils, the Sala del Molino de Harina (flour mill room), and rooms devoted to prehistory, the Roman world, funerary traditions and the Neolithic, Copper and Bronze Ages, as well as an audiovisual room. It also includes a nature interpretation centre near the Fortaleza de la Mota.
