About the museum
The house is a 19th-century noble residence, remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century, in which Niceto Alcalá-Zamora was born in 1877. His daughters, Purificación and Isabel, donated it to the Priego town council on 17 December 1986. It opened to the public in August 1987 with a biographical exhibition and a bust of the president in the garden. The municipal board “Niceto Alcalá-Zamora y Torres” was established on 26 October 1993 and has managed the museum since then. After a full restoration in 1998 and 1999, it reopened on 4 March 1999.
The building has a rectangular plan, a symmetrical façade and a central courtyard with galleries, in which an oak tree planted by Niceto himself as a child still grows. The ground floor preserves the domestic atmosphere: entrance hall (zaguán), lounge, dining room, kitchen, pantry, cellar and garden. The first floor houses the exhibition rooms, and the second floor is the seat of the Patronato, with offices, an archive, a library and an audiovisual room.
In the seven rooms on the first floor his life is traced by stages: birth and childhood, university studies, political career, the presidency of the Republic (1931–1936), exile in Argentina and his final years until his death in Buenos Aires in 1949, with documents, furniture and personal objects.
