About the museum
The museum was created on the initiative of the Diputación Provincial de Soria and opened in 2012. It occupies the Palacio de los Mendoza, in the centre of the Plaza Mayor of Morón de Almazán, a complex considered one of the most beautiful of the Spanish Renaissance. From the outset its management has been the responsibility of the cultural management company SoriamuséuM.
The collection comes from private collections and from loans by many people from Soria, who handed over garments that their ancestors had kept in chests for generations. It was assembled by the Culture Department of the Diputación and continues to grow every year. The museum aims to preserve traditional dress and promote it as ethnological heritage, and to analyse its social, cultural and economic implications.
The collection includes everyday and festive clothing, trousseaus, jewellery and accessories, as well as the materials and tools with which fabrics were made. Ritual costumes, prints, old photographs and audiovisuals complete the route. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, workshops, lectures, textile fairs and educational activities.
