About the museum
The museum room is dedicated to the violinist and composer Pablo Sarasate, a native of Pamplona, and displays the objects that the musician himself bequeathed to the City Council of Pamplona in 1893. Since 2008 they have been shown in their current location, on the first floor of the Palacio del Condestable, opposite the church of San Saturnino.
The palace is a noble house with a large central courtyard, built in 1530 by the fourth Count of Lerín. By inheritance it passed to the Ducal House of Alba, which later handed it over to city institutions. It was the archbishop's residence in the 17th and 18th centuries, the seat of the City Council between 1752 and 1760 while the new town hall was being built, and later the headquarters of the association Amigos del Arte Musical. Today it operates as the City Council's cultural centre (Civivox Condestable).
The collection includes personal belongings of Sarasate and of his family and friends, photographs, gifts and decorations received from kings and emperors, a large portrait of him, a bronze bust by Mariano Benlliure, violins by Vuillaume, Gand and Bernardel, and a Bechstein piano. The scores, works and concert programmes he bequeathed are also kept in the Municipal Archive.
