About the museum
The Museo Universidad de Navarra (MUN) grew out of a project begun in 2008, when María Josefa Huarte asked the university to build a museum with Rafael Moneo; the university decided to go ahead in 2009. The building, on the Pamplona campus, covers about 12,000 m² across three floors and houses the exhibition galleries and a theatre. The museum opened in 2015.
Its collections have two main origins. The photography collection begins with the legacy that José Ortiz-Echagüe donated to the university in 1981, which was opened as a fund in 1990; in 1998 the university decided to build a collection tracing photography from its origins to the present day. The second core is the legacy of María Josefa Huarte (2008), with about fifty paintings and sculptures by Spanish and international artists such as Palazuelo, Oteiza, Tàpies, Chillida, Rothko, Picasso and Kandinsky.
Other legacies and donations have since been added, including those of Rafael Sanz Lobato (2014) and Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (2018). The collection is considered “living” and is constantly growing, and the museum also runs an artist-in-residence programme, performing arts and educational activities.
