About the museum
The Museo Parroquial del Santísimo Cristo de los Milagros is located inside the parish complex of El Bonillo, next to the church of Santa Catalina. It houses a collection of religious painting, highlighted by the Christ embracing the cross attributed to El Greco, together with two portraits of Saint Peter and Saint Vincent Ferrer attributed to José de Ribera, The Magdalene by Andrea del Sarto and The Miracle of Christ by the Baroque painter Vicente López Portaña. The collection is completed by other devotional pieces, among them the image of the Santísimo Cristo de los Milagros, patron of the town.
The church was built over an earlier construction; the present building was begun in 1699 and the high altarpiece in 1733. The museum, created in 1975, is closely linked to the religious and social life of the municipality: today it is looked after and staffed by members of the Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de los Milagros, who also act as guides. Visits are by arrangement, and the municipality plans to improve the accessibility of the room and set a fixed opening time.
