About the museum

The museum occupies the former Sacristía Mayor (main sacristy) of the Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Pastrana, a church that served as the burial place of the princes of Éboli and of the Mendoza del Infantado family. Its main piece is a series of Hispano-Flemish Gothic tapestries from the late 15th century, which tell the story of the conquest of Arcila and Tangier by Afonso V of Portugal in 1471.

The parish museum opened on 16 July 1950, the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The tapestries were restored from 2008 onwards at the De Wit royal workshop in Mechelen (Belgium), with the support of the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, and toured museums in Spain, Europe and the United States before returning to the parish on 31 October 2013.

Work to adapt and extend the building began in October 2012. It was designed by the architect Francisco Jurado and declared of regional interest, with support from European rural development funds. The renovated museum opened on 10 October 2014, during the Año Teresiano (Teresian Year).

In addition to the tapestries, two rooms show painting, sculpture and goldsmith's work, with works by Juan de Borgoña and Juan Carreño de Miranda and carvings attributed to Francisco Salzillo and Alonso Cano. The visit includes the ducal pantheon of the Colegiata.
