About the museum
The Museo Taurino de València was founded in 1929 with the holdings from the donation of Luis Moróder Peiró, which included the collection of the picador José Bayard “Badila”. Both collectors gathered objects and materials on bullfighting from the 19th century and the early 20th century over many years.
Over time the museum was renovated and enlarged with Valencian holdings, until it became one of the oldest and most important museums of its kind in Spain. It depends on the Diputación de València, which also manages the adjoining bullring. The bullring building, the work of Sebastián Monleón Estellés, has belonged to the Hospital General since 1625 and was declared a National Monument in 1983.
The permanent exhibition shows the evolution of Valencian bullfighting from the 19th century to the present, and the history of the Valencia bullring, which opened in 1859. It is organised into five thematic areas: the evolution of Valencian bullfighting, the fighting bull, the training of the bullfighter, the liturgy of the bullfight and the bullring. The museum also has an audiovisual room where the course of a bullfight with its three tercios is shown, and a specialist library, which is closed for organisational reasons.
