About the museum

The Diputación de València opened the Museu Valencià de la Il·lustració i de la Modernitat (MuVIM) in 2001 with the aim of preserving and presenting the ideas and values that made the modern world possible, beginning with the Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th centuries. From the outset it was defined as a museum of ideas.

Its permanent exhibition, “La Aventura del Pensamiento” (The Adventure of Thought), explains how Western society has evolved from the Middle Ages to the present day. It is presented without objects or explanatory texts and relies on new information technologies, as an intellectual, sensory and emotional experience that can be followed in Valencian, Castilian, English and French.

In addition, the museum runs temporary exhibitions on the problems and advances of the contemporary world, lectures, concerts, film cycles, conferences and workshops. In the entrance hall there is a three-dimensional model of 18th-century Valencia based on the plan by Father Tosca, and in the semi-basement the remains of a medieval tower are preserved.
