About the museum
The idea for the museum arose in 1986 with the creation of a foundation made up of Ibi town council, the Cooperativa Payá, the Generalitat Valenciana and the then Caja de Ahorros de Alicante y Murcia. It opened on 20 December 1990 in the Casa Gran, an 18th-century manor house that served as its temporary home.
The permanent home is the former Payá factory, the town's first toy company, which opened as the museum on 29 November 2013. The central hall, dating from 1912 and rebuilt in 1962, houses the permanent exhibition; the workshop hall, dating from 1915, is used for temporary exhibitions. Part of the original machinery and tools can be seen through the windows.
The core of the collection consists of toys donated by workers of the Cooperativa Payá, mainly made in Ibi and in Germany, and it has been enlarged with funds from the town council and new donations from companies and individuals. The museum holds more than 6,000 pieces and displays around 500, grouped by theme: planes and ships, trains, cars and motorbikes, dolls, kitchen, dining and bathroom play sets, and vintage board games.
