About the museum
The Museo de la Biodiversidad in Ibi was born from a collaboration between Ibi town council and the University of Alicante, through the Ibero-American Centre for Biodiversity (CIBIO). It occupies a former factory of the Payá family in the centre of the town. Its aim is to raise awareness among all audiences of the importance of nature conservation and of the effects of human activity on thousands of species of fauna and flora.
Its holdings come from the scientific collections of CIBIO and from specimens deposited by bodies responsible for environmental conservation, among them the Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard and the Customs Surveillance Service. In 2016 improvement works were carried out on the building to comply with the current safety regulations.
The route is organised into four permanent rooms: one on threatened biodiversity, focusing on the trade and illegal trafficking of species; one on Mediterranean biodiversity, with scale display cases of the main habitats; one on the Ibero-American tropical rainforest; and one on the African savanna, with pieces loaned by the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales. Throughout the year they are complemented by temporary and travelling exhibitions, animated visits and workshops.
