About the museum

The Museums of Mequinenza bring together the Museum of History and the Mining Museum, which are visited together on a guided tour. Mequinenza lies at the confluence of the Ebro, Segre and Cinca rivers, a strategic position that shaped its history as a place of river trade, military defence and passage. In the late 1950s the construction of the Riba-roja reservoir submerged the old town, now known as Pueblo Viejo, and forced its residents to move.

The Museum of History tells the story of the town on the banks of the three rivers and of the Camino de Sirga, the towpath along which the llauts, the typical boats of the lower Ebro, were hauled upstream. It includes the Jesús Moncada Space, dedicated to the town’s most universal writer: his books, his paintings, the translations of “Camí de Sirga” and his photographs of old Mequinenza.

The Mining Museum is located in a real coal mine. Wearing helmets and accompanied by guides, visitors walk through galleries to understand the work of the miners in the Mequinenza coal basin, which was exploited from the mid-19th century, with real machinery and historical images covering more than 170 years of mining. The complex, together with Pueblo Viejo, has been declared a Space of Tourist Interest of Aragon.
