About the museum
The Museu de Ceràmica Popular de L’Ametlla de Mar dates back to 1992, when the Fundación Privada Martí-Castro was established, although it did not open its doors until 5 May 2001. Since 2000 L’Ametlla de Mar town council has been part of its board of trustees.
It is a monographic centre dedicated to the traditional pottery made and used over the last two hundred years in the Iberian Peninsula. Its permanent holdings comprise around 6,500 clay objects from more than 300 pottery centres in 41 provinces of Spain, and its permanent exhibition has some 4,500 pieces, organised into four circuits spread over several floors.
The circuits cover the uses of pottery (water, wine, oil, food), the pottery centres, the botijo (traditional clay water jug) and its 32 families or types, and the processes and techniques of manufacture, with 48 metres of images accompanied by materials. Among the pieces, a quartillo from Miravet stands out: a vessel for measuring liquids in the old system of weights and measures.
