About the museum

Móra la Nova was historically a very important station: when this section of the Directos line opened at the end of the 19th century, its main purpose was to link Barcelona with Madrid. Steam locomotives had to be changed every 150–180 kilometres, and Móra la Nova lay about 150 km from Barcelona and about 180 km from Zaragoza. Crews were also changed there, so the station had buildings for sleeping and eating, and freight trains were sorted.

Between 1890 and the 1970s the town had a whole ancillary industry linked to the locomotive depot, which at its height had almost a hundred locomotives assigned to it. The museum recovers the material and intangible elements of that history, which came close to being lost.

The Museu del Ferrocarril occupies several buildings of the former railway complex and others of new construction. It is run by volunteers from the Associació per a la Preservació del Patrimoni Ferroviari i Industrial and is part of the mNACTEC territorial system. Four spaces can be visited today: the Torre de l'Enclavament (signal tower), the turntable, the rolling stock workshop and the shed of the historic tourist train. Throughout the year it also hosts events such as dramatised visits, the railway christening, the Festa del Tren, the show “L'Esperit del Nadal” and, since 2024, the Festa del Vapor.

Highlights

  • Torre de l'Enclavament from 1928, with a reception room and a reconstruction of the station master's office
  • Turntable recovered from another station and placed in the former pit
  • Rolling stock workshop, the last survivor of the old depot
  • Shed of the historic tourist train with steam, electric and diesel locomotives
  • Events such as the Festa del Tren and the Festa del Vapor

Permanent exhibitions

  • Torre de l'Enclavament – 1928 building with the restored original signalling, the reception point, a reconstruction of the station master's office and ticket office, an area on railway safety and an audiovisual projection.
  • Pont giratori – Turntable bought in Granada and moved to Móra la Nova, as the station's original was scrapped; volunteers emptied the former pit and installed it.
  • Cotxera del tren històric turístic – Hall of 3,520 m² with four tracks, built in 2011 on former shunting tracks, with steam, electric and diesel locomotives, passenger coaches and freight wagons.
