About the museum
The Museu del Ferrocarril de Mallorca opened in November 2025, to mark 150 years since the island's first railway line, which connected Palma and Inca in 1875 under the direction of the engineer Eusebi Estada. It is housed in the depot shed of the former Son Carrió station, in the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.
The project began in 2012, when the building was handed over to the Fundació Ferrocaib, which for more than seventeen years restored Mallorca's railway heritage and owns most of the collection. The work was financed with almost €3.7 million from Next Generation EU funds, received through Sant Llorenç des Cardassar Town Council. The museum is promoted by Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) and the foundation.
The visit combines stagecraft and technology: it starts in a recreated late 19th-century station, continues in a restored historic carriage with a panoramic projection of the landscape of the past, and ends in an interactive space with games, digital resources and a driving simulator. The collection includes steam and diesel locomotives, passenger carriages and service vehicles, among them a mail van built in Swansea in 1874.
