About the museum

The museum occupies La Gabella, a manor house with a square plan and a hipped roof, documented since the 17th century. It was a store for basic goods, the town's inn in the 18th century and the home of the Pagès family at the end of the 19th century, and it was abandoned at the start of the Civil War. Arbúcies town council bought the building in 1970 and from 1979 began to give it a cultural use.

That year the Recerques group was formed, which recovered local heritage and history and gathered the ethnological, photographic and oral material of the Montseny that forms the basis of the present collections. In 1983 the Fundación Pública Museo Municipal de Arbúcies was created; the first phase of the museum opened in May 1985 and the second two years later.

Today the museum is a centre for exhibition, conservation, dissemination and research of the cultural heritage of the Montseny, in a restored building of 1,800 m². Its permanent rooms show the material evidence of the communities that have settled in the massif; the virtual visit covers the first settlers, traditional society and industrialisation. It also offers itineraries, workshops and guided visits.
