About the museum
The Museu Municipal Josep Aragay de Breda was founded in 1974 and is housed in the former church of Santa Maria, a 12th-century building. It is a monographic museum devoted to the Noucentista artist Josep Aragay i Blanchar (Barcelona, 1889 – Breda, 1973), who was a draughtsman, engraver, painter and ceramicist, but also a poet, teacher, politician and a prominent art critic and theorist.
Aragay settled in Breda in 1924, the pottery village of his mother, where he had spent his summers since childhood. There he painted the only fresco of his career, in the baptistery of the Gothic church of Santa Maria, which was destroyed by a fire towards the end of the Civil War, and in 1925 he set up a ceramics workshop in which he combined decorative ceramics of unique pieces with high-quality industrial production. During the war he devoted himself to etching. He died in Breda in January 1973, and the museum bearing his name opened the following year.
The collection brings together an important body of painting, ceramics, drawing and etching, as well as some graphic and literary documents that place Aragay among the most prominent theorists of Noucentisme.
