About the museum
The Región Ambarina is one of the venues of Territorio Dinópolis, the network of centres run by the Fundación Dinópolis in villages of the province of Teruel where important palaeontological finds have been made. It is located in Rubielos de Mora, about 60 km from Teruel, on the outskirts of the medieval town, and opened in 2004.
The centre stands on a site of exceptional preservation: a fossilised ancient lake that existed in the area between 23 and 5 million years ago. Animals that were trapped and fossilised on the lake bed, and others that were covered by the resin of large trees, which still preserves them inside red amber.
Palaeobotany is the central theme of the visit. Visitors can see insects preserved in amber, remains and replicas of Moropus, an extinct mammal, and areas explaining the techniques palaeontologists use to clean, classify and analyse fossils. Visits to the venues are guided and last about one hour.
