Museo Etnográfico Torre de Celas

About the museum

The museum occupies the Torre de Celas, the keep that survives from the Vinseira fortress, built at the end of the 14th century under the protection of the Andrade family on the Camino Inglés (English Way). The Irmandiños destroyed it during the revolts of the 15th century. The tower, about 12 metres tall with granite walls 1.5 metres thick, was linked to a manor house (pazo) that has disappeared completely. It is a Bien de Interés Cultural (protected cultural heritage site).

Restoration began in 1992, with students from a training workshop (escuela taller), and the museum opened its doors two years later. The three-storey building, of 192 m², houses the Museo Etnográfico Municipal, with a permanent exhibition of traditional Galician costumes, farm implements and tools of the local trades.

The gardens surrounding the tower are part of the visit: a channel and several pieces of traditional farm implements complete the route through the Celas public park.
