About the museum

Dalénium has its origins in the idea of a technology cottage in the spirit of Gustaf Dalén, a place where children's and young people's curiosity and desire to create have room. Dalén, an inventor and Nobel Prize laureate in physics, was born in Stenstorp, and when the Dalén Museum opened in 1996 the idea grew of an experimental environment for children and young people next to the museum.

In 1999 the non-profit association Dalénium Science Center was formed. The former Forum building and an old police station were rebuilt and extended, and the result was an exhibition hall of about 700 square metres. The science centre opened to the public on 19 May 2001 and was inaugurated the same year by Crown Princess Victoria. The activities are still run by the association without profit motive, with a board that has experience from schools, business, municipalities and the voluntary sector.

The idea is to awaken interest in mathematics, science and technology, mainly among children and young people but also among adults. The exhibition is based on stations where visitors can test, build and explore for themselves, including with water and wind, a construction section, a climbing wall and VR. Experiment shows are held on the Science Stage (Vetenskapsscenen), and the house also has a permanent exhibition of Oscar Reuterswärd's impossible figures in watercolour. School classes and preschool groups can book educational programmes that follow the curricula.
