About the museum

For at least half a millennium, iron ore has been extracted from the forests around Tuna Hästberg, from small hand-dug mines to one of the more significant industrial mines in Bergslagen. Around 1918, new deep shafts with hoists and engine houses were built, and the mine grew into a large underground landscape with shafts down to 552 metres and tunnels spanning miles. At its peak around 150 miners worked underground and roughly as many above ground. In total about 9 million tonnes of rock and ore were extracted before the mine closed in the summer of 1968.

When the pumps were switched off, the mine filled with water, and the lakes reached their present level fifteen years later. At the end of the 1990s young people began exploring it, and the association Baggbodykarna documented and cleared the mine. The first guided tour with paying guests took place in 2000. Äventyrsgruvan was formed as an economic association in 2009, and in 2011 the operation was inaugurated with guided tours in the drained parts.

Today the mine offers guided tours to a depth of 80 metres, with underground lakes, large rock chambers and a coffee break in the old dynamite store. On the surface stands the engine house, more than a hundred years old, which has been restored according to the original drawings and is used as an event venue. The operation also collects stories and objects from the mine's history.
