About the museum

Tunabygdens Gammelgård (Tuna District Old Farm) is the local heritage society’s own homestead museum and lies like a green oasis on the western bank of the Dalälven river in Borlänge. The homestead museum was founded in 1920 and is one of Sweden’s largest, with 35 buildings. The farm is owned and managed by Tunabygdens Hembygdsförening (Tunabygden Local Heritage Society), which was formed in 1915.

Among the buildings are Böösloftet, Kullesgårdens parstuga (Kullesgården’s double cottage), Anders Matsgården, Wallinstugan and Tjärna småskola (Tjärna small school). The area also has, among others, a post-built granary (stolphärbre), storehouses, a smithy, a skvaltkvarn (simple water-powered mill), summer-pasture buildings (fäbod), an iron weighbridge from Domnarvets Jernverk and the Fornkammaren (antiquities chamber). Information on the buildings is available in Swedish, English and German.

At the old farm, midsummer celebrations, Christmas markets, dance evenings, open-air church services, weddings and theatre are normally held. There is also a café in Kohlsgården that is open in summer and is also open for weddings and other events. The association publishes the yearbook Tunum and is associated with Stora Tuna spelmanslag (Stora Tuna fiddlers’ association) and Stora Tuna folkdansgille (Stora Tuna folk dance guild).
