About the museum

The village shop in Västra Bodane started in 1868, only a few years after trade outside the towns had been permitted. The road was busy, not least with pedlars on their way to Norway, and the business grew until the house was extended in the 1880s with the present shop premises. In 1908 the property was bought by Carl Hilmer and Hulda Larsson, and the business was named C H Larsson Diversehandel. Carl Hilmer walked or went by horse to Vänersborg to sell eggs, flour and slaughtered calves, and to buy colonial goods such as spices, sugar, tobacco, snuff, paraffin and window glass for the shop.

The shop operated as a village general store until 1977, when family member Annie Larsson retired. The present owner is the third generation of the family. What makes the place unusual is that its interior is completely preserved, including two boddrakar (traditional shop counters) and glazed windows in front of the shelves, so that you can see how a shop looked at the turn of the last century. The Swedish National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet) surveyed and documented the buildings in 2007.

Today the village shop operates as Affärsmuseet. The collection consists of goods, packaging and tools from a bygone era, and visitors can buy candy in paper cones as they used to. The museum welcomes individual visitors, groups and school classes.
