About the museum
Aguélimuseet in Sala shows the largest collection of works by Ivan Aguéli (1869–1917), both paintings and drawings, and is run by Sala konstförening (Sala Art Association), a non-profit association founded in 1941. The museum was inaugurated in 1962 and moved in 2007 to its current premises in the cultural quarter Täljstenen. Between 1962 and 2007 it was on the upper floor of the old hot-bath house next to the library.
The premises are housed in Sala's old power station, built in 1903. The collections are for the most part based on the donations of Dr Carl Friberg and the couple Palm, and are owned by Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet. Carl Friberg was Sala's first town physician and founded Sala konstförening.
In addition to the 35 paintings by Aguéli, the collection contains works by many of the foremost artists of Swedish modernism, such as Vera Nilsson, Carl Kylberg, Helene Schjerfbeck, Karl Nordström, Carl Wilhelmson, Maj Bring and Ernst Josephson. Temporary exhibitions are shown in the art hall Travershallen, and the museum also runs a digital archive of letters to and from Ivan Aguéli.
