About the museum
Skultuna, north of Västerås, is known for its brass works (messingsbruk), founded in 1607. Skultuna hembygdsförening (Skultuna Local Heritage Society) was formed on 5 November 1954 to care for objects and memories from the cultural and personal history of the old parish, and to show the collections to the people of Skultuna and to visitors.
The society's museum lies in one of the old roasting houses (hyttor) at Brännugnsbacken in the works environment, the so-called Arkivhyttan (Archive House). Among other things it shows hand tools, radio sets, older telephone exchanges, projectors, panels with foundry products, a model of the cableway that ran to the sawmill in 1918, and the furnishings of box-maker Westerberg from the 1910s. Outside the museum the society has placed a casting slab and a cableway basket more than a hundred years old, which was used to transport peat to the works.
The society also runs the Hembygdskällaren (Local Heritage Cellar), with a school museum at Vallonvägen 20 C, and Paradiset (Paradise) at Kärrbo, a museum that reflects a workers' home in the early 20th century.
