About the museum
Heby was long known for brick, especially roof tiles, and during the brick era at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century up to twelve brickworks were in operation at the same time in today’s Heby municipality. When the last large works, Olsson & Rosenlund, closed in the 1980s, former brickworkers and other interested people began to gather to preserve the knowledge and memories. In 1989 this led to the formation of an interest association with the aim of creating a brickworks museum.
The museum was inaugurated in 1995 on the ground floor of the old station building, with the municipality as principal organiser. When the municipality withdrew, the activity moved to the old brewery in central Heby, which is built of hand-moulded brick from Juhlins tegelbruk. The building was bought in 2006 by the artist couple Sonja Petterson and ÅC Danell, and the museum reopened in 2007. Today the interest association is responsible for all the activities.
The exhibition shows presses, tools, implements, bricks and photographs that explain how production took place and how the workers lived. The tramps (luffarna), who were closely associated with the brickworks, are represented in the form of photographs and tramp art. The upper floor is an art hall with sculptures by Sonja Petterson and paintings by ÅC Danell, and next to the museum lies the sculpture park Tant Fridas stig (Aunt Frida’s Path).
