About the museum
Väsby kungsgård in Sala has its origins in Gustav Vasa's interest in the silver mine at Salberget. The king considered Väsby village conveniently close to the mine and made the farm a royal estate, to which his successors also came during their visits. According to tradition, Gustav II Adolf met his beloved Ebba Brahe here, and an avenue by the Ekeby ponds is still called Suckarnas allé (the Avenue of Sighs).
The farm later became the seat of the mine bailiffs (gruvfogdar), and the court lived here from September 1710 to May 1711, when the plague was raging in Stockholm. The present main building was erected after a fire in 1730 and was completed in 1736. In the early 20th century, officers from the Västmanlands trängkår (Västmanland Supply Corps) were stationed at the farm.
Today the royal estate is run as a museum by Sala Hembygds- och Fornminnesförening (Sala Local Heritage and Antiquities Society). The collection comprises around 7,000 objects, including a private arms collection. Several rooms are furnished with furniture and objects from the 1700s and 1800s, and on the upper floor are shown, among other things, hunting and fishing equipment, weights and measures, musical instruments and household items. In summer the outbuilding museums are open, with carriages, craft tools, an iron stove museum, a textile museum and a reconstructed miner's dwelling.
