About the museum

Alltidhults skola is a well-preserved rural school in Jämshög parish in Olofström Municipality. It is one of the small village schools where many Swedes received their first education. The school started in 1844, two years after the Elementary School Ordinance made elementary schooling compulsory, in a cottage moved onto the village common.

In 1877 a proper classroom was built and the old cottage became the teacher’s residence. Pupil numbers peaked in the 1880s with over 50 children and then fell to 20–30 around the turn of the century. During the 1940s only one pupil remained and the school was closed. The writers Harry Martinson, who attended the school in 1913–1914, and Sven Edvin Salje have connections to the place.

The building is a single-storey log house on a high stone foundation, with a red-painted facade and its original interior: classroom, teacher’s residence and tiled stoves. The plot includes a fenced garden and an outbuilding. The school was declared a listed building in 2005 and is today managed by Alltidhults intresseförening, which uses the house as a village hall and for summer activities.
