About the museum
Humletorkan was built in 1926 to dry hops, and at most eight tonnes of hop cones were dried here per year. The area around Näsum was a centre of Swedish hop growing, and in 1927 there were 78 hop gardens in the area. When hop imports increased after the Second World War, cultivation declined, and drying ceased in 1959.
Humletorkan is described as the country's only preserved hop kiln. The building was restored about thirty years ago, and parts of the old drying equipment remain. The association Humlebygget, which started in 1992, owns and manages the facility, with the aim that the buildings and surroundings be cared for in a culturally acceptable way.
Today there is a café and a shop in the building, and a hostel with 16 beds in six rooms is run by Lilla Smakeriet AB. Group visits include a short story about the history of the hop kiln, hops and hop drying. Humletorkan is located along Humleslingan, and hop bines, harvested every year, grow outside the building.
