About the museum
Apotekarsocietetens museum, formerly the Farmacihistoriska museet (Museum of Pharmacy History), tells the history of pharmacies and medicines in Sweden. The museum is housed in a late 19th-century courtyard building at Wallingatan 24 and has been run by Apotekarsocieteten (the Swedish Society of Apothecaries) since 1987.
The exhibitions show how medicines have been manufactured, stored and used from the 17th century to the present day. They include pharmacy fittings, old laboratory instruments, medicine packaging, prescriptions and tools. The objects and settings show how illnesses were treated, what knowledge existed and how scientific advances have changed everyday life, healthcare and the work of producing medicines.
The museum is open to the public and is aimed both at curious visitors and at researchers. The collections consist of objects and documents on pharmacy and the pharmacy trade, and some of the material has been digitised.
