About the museum
Arvemuseet is run by the non-profit association Bevara Ångaren Östersund and lies in Södra Arvesund on the shore of lake Storsjön. The museum is part of the association’s visitor site, where the steamship S/S Östersund also has its home port. It shows how people’s homes and work changed with the electric motor, the tractor, the milking machine and other inventions.
S/S Östersund was built in 1874 at Oscarshamn’s mechanical workshop, transported in parts by sea to Sundsvall and then by horse over winter roads to Östersund, where the ship was assembled. The superstructure was rebuilt in 1886, and in 1903 the vessel received a new boiler and engine. It was in service until 1963.
The exhibitions include classic motorcycles in running condition, an exhibition on the development of the Wankel engine (vankelmotorn), a setting with the Åsén brothers’ joinery from Häljesund, a story of Trollsåsen farm and its mountain cattle (fjällkor), and sections on forestry and the North Swedish horse. There is also a working smithy and a camera exhibition. Outside, tractors and other large equipment are on display.
