About the museum
The Stiftelsen Gaaltije was formed in 1984 to look after the legacy of Kvinnliga Missions Arbetare (the Women’s Mission Workers) and their work at Fjällgård in Hålland in Åre Municipality. The foundation later started the South Sámi cultural centre Gaaltije, and since 1999 the activity has been housed in the former customs house at Köpmangatan 58 in central Östersund (South Sámi: Staare). The main organisers of the foundation are Svenska Samernas Riksförbund (the Swedish Sámi National Association), Same Ätnam, Åarjelraedtien Sibrie, Staaren Sibrie and Frostviken-Hotagen Sameförening (Sámi association).
In the house, Gaaltije – saemien museume (South Sámi museum) is run. It tells of Sámi history and describes society and the future from a Sámi perspective. The aim is to show both permanent and temporary exhibitions with artistic, historical and societal perspectives, and to make clear that Sámi culture belongs not only to the past but also to the present and the future. Admission is free.
The cultural centre also has a shop with handicrafts, crafts, books, jewellery, clothing and food from Sámi entrepreneurs. From here the foundation’s other work is also carried out, as a resource centre for South Sámi culture, language, livelihoods and cultural environment.
