About the museum
The museum is based on the collections that the crofter’s son Per-Olof Nilsson (1874–1955), known as Mus-Olle, built up over many years. He cycled around Lake Alsen in search of packaging, household items and natural specimens, and lived on fishing and day labour; income from showing the museum eventually became a source of revenue. As early as 1906 he advertised with a poster about the future museum in Ytterån, and the collection then comprised 10,000 objects.
From 1911 the collections have been shown at their present location, where the cottage in which Olle lived his whole life still stands. There are several buildings on the farm, and the new museum building, which houses most of the collections, was built in 1989. The collecting was linked to the spa resort of Ytterån, which attracted guests from all over the world and made it possible to obtain objects from there.
Today the museum is run by Ytterå hembygdsförening (Ytterå local heritage society). The collection is very broad and includes stamps, printed matter, natural specimens, porcelain, ceramics, textiles and costumes; the large quantity of packaging is particularly remarkable. Next to the museum is the hembygdsgård (homestead museum) with a café.
