About the museum
The Medicinhistoriska museet (Museum of Medical History) in Falun was founded in 1999 and is located in the Nisser House by Falun hospital. The house was built in 1896 as a workhouse and welfare institution and from the 1940s was used by the county council for the care of long-term patients.
In the house’s long corridors and halls, old care settings are now displayed, with furnishings, apparatus and instruments that have been collected. The permanent exhibition consists of old healthcare materials, instruments, technical equipment, teaching materials and photographs, including an operating theatre from the early 20th century, and a ward gives an insight into the former public healthcare.
The museum is run by the Medicinhistoriska museets vänförening (Friends of the Museum of Medical History) and is looked after by dedicated nurses. Group visits can be booked, and the museum suits, among others, healthcare staff and anyone interested in older healthcare.
