About the museum
Dalregementet (Dalarna Regiment) was established in 1625, and the museum association presents its history in two places. At Rommehedslägret (Rommehed Camp) in Borlänge, the regiment’s meeting place from 1796 to 1908, one of the best-preserved camps in the country can be found. The museum is housed in a conscript barracks from 1876 and depicts the history of the regiment, from the Dala banners (dalafänikor) of the Middle Ages and the life of soldiers in the Swedish Empire era (stormaktstiden) to life at Rommehed, where the allocation system (indelningsverket) with its eight parish companies and the rote system is explained, and the peaceful 19th century is shown with tent camps on the heath and mess life in the Officers’ Salon.
Rommehedslägret was a regional pilot project during the European Architectural Heritage Year of 1975 and became a listed building in 1991. Dalregementet moved to Falun in 1908, and in Falun the museum at Kaserngården (the barracks yard) depicts the fate of the conscript regiment from 1908 until its closure in 2000.
The museums are run by the association Dalregementets museer, and Dalregementet turns 400 in 2025.
