About the museum

The Båt- och maskinmuseum (Boat and Engine Museum) is run by Oskarshamns Sjöfartsförening (Oskarshamn Maritime Association) and lies by the quay with a view of the guest harbour and the oldest districts, Besväret and Fnyket. In the museum hall visitors can experience a piece of shipyard and industrial history from Oskarshamn.

The collections consist of many boats, engines and accessories. Among the objects are a wood-fired steam boiler and the boat Spiggen. The largest object is the steam engine from the vessel Gustavsberg VII, an engine of 500 horsepower that weighs 14 tonnes. Both the vessel and the engine were built in Oskarshamn in 1912, and the collections also include a model of the vessel. On certain occasions visitors can see the steam engine in operation, with the help of an auxiliary motor on the drive shaft.

Outside the museum the steamboat s/s Nalle lies moored at the quay. It was built at Oskarshamn's shipyard in 1923, has been restored to its original condition and is K-marked (registered as a historic vessel). The museum harbour is often visited by sailing ships and other traditional vessels, and the association documents the visits in a ship's log. The Sjöfartsföreningen also runs Oskarshamns sjöfartsmuseum (Oskarshamn Maritime Museum) in the Kulturhuset (Culture House).
