About the museum
Axel Petersson (1868–1925), known as Döderhultarn, was a sculptor whose wooden figures of people and animals became well known far beyond Småland. Around 1907 he moved into a small house on what is now Garvaregatan in Oskarshamn, where he rented a room on the upper floor. The room served as both home and studio, and he lived and worked there until his death in 1925.
The house was declared a cultural heritage monument (kulturminnesmärke) in 1968, and Hembygdsföreningen Oskarshamn–Döderhult (Oskarshamn–Döderhult Local Heritage Society) then took over the studio museum. The dwelling is furnished and equipped as it was when Döderhultarn worked there, with the artist's own furniture and fittings, and visitors can see how he worked on his sculptures with simple tools.
The entrance is from the courtyard. The sculptures themselves are not shown in the studio but at Döderhultarmuseet (the Döderhultarn Museum) in the Kulturhuset, Hantverksgatan 18–20.
