About the museum
The association Oskarshamns Grafiska Museum was formed on 8 November 2004 by people who wanted to preserve the knowledge and working methods of the graphic crafts, from the late 1800s to the 1980s. Already from the 1990s, objects connected with printing and envelope production in the region had been collected.
The collections consist of machines, tools, pictures, documents, literature and books owned by the independent voluntary association. The purpose is to describe the development of the graphic industry and its importance for Oskarshamn and the surrounding area since the early 20th century, with particular focus on newspapers, commercial printing houses, bookbinderies and the manufacture of envelopes and document bags, and on what the industry has meant as an employer, opinion-former and educator.
The museum is run on voluntary work and support from members, individuals, Oskarshamn Municipality and companies. The association also wishes to pass on its knowledge to younger generations by showing typography, machine and hand composition, hand printing, bookbinding and the operation of an envelope machine. During the year, open days are held on Arkivens dag (Archives Day), together with book-printing workshops and Lucia glögg (mulled wine) at the museum.
