About the museum

Figeholms sjöfartsmuseum is located in the Hamnmagasinet (harbour warehouse) at the mouth of the Norrån. The warehouse was built around 1800 as a storehouse for Fårbo manor, and the double doors facing the river show the building's role as a link between sea and land transport. Until the Old Quay was built in the 1870s, the Norrån was Figeholm's inner harbour. In the second half of the 20th century the building was used as a store for fertiliser, lime and other goods that came by sea, and until the late 1970s as the municipality's storage facility.

Oskarshamn Municipality made the building available to the association Hamnmagasinets Vänner (Friends of the Harbour Warehouse) for a local maritime museum. After foundation strengthening and fitting-out work, the premises came into use in 1986, and the museum opened in April 1987 in the presence of the county antiquarian Dag Widholm. The basis of the collections was objects that had belonged to the harbour of Figeholm.

On the lower floor, among other things, traditional local boats and an older large boat are shown. The upper floor has three sections: the world of the sailing ships, with paintings, photographs, documents and objects; the craft of seafaring, with equipment, tools and navigation instruments, and the harbour's gear; and the cultural history of the archipelago, shaped by fishing.
