About the museum
The activities of the Biologiska museet (Biological Museum) began in early 2002 under the name Regionherbariet i Oskarshamn (Regional Herbarium in Oskarshamn). Plant collections that had belonged to some schools, and material from the survey of Småland's flora, were first placed in a pavilion at the former epidemic hospital on Björngatan. When the property was sold in 2007 the collections moved to larger premises in the former Åsaskolan on Hantverksgatan. At the same time a zoological department was added, which had previously been in a shelter, and the museum received the name Biologiska museet i Oskarshamn.
In 2014–2015 the whole operation moved to its present premises at Gyllings väg 9 in the Västra industriområdet (Western Industrial Area), where everything fits into one connected space. By then the botanical collection had grown from about 150,000 to over 230,000 objects, and today the plant collection comprises over 320,000 objects from all the continents.
The bird collection has nearly 400 birds that originally belonged to the grammar school (läroverket) in Oskarshamn. Most come from the mid-19th century, and here are species that then nested in Sweden, such as great bustard (stortrapp) and black stork. The collections also include an egg collection with 290 eggs collected between 1832 and 1867, insects and molluscs, and a library with about 6,800 publications and maps. The museum also runs surveys of giant trees, cold springs (kallkällor) and croft plants, and activities at Fallebo gård (Fallebo Farm). The Biologiska sällskapet i Oskarshamn (Biological Society of Oskarshamn) arranges viewings and excursions.
