About the museum
The Båtmagasinet (Boat Depot) on Rindö houses the Maritime Museum's (Sjöhistoriska museet) collection of leisure boats and boat engines. The collection was moved there in 2018 from Boat Hall 2 on Södra Djurgården in Stockholm. The premises are a former military storehouse at Oskar-Fredriksborg fortress, which is known locally as Kalsongförrådet (the Underpants Store).
The collection comprises around a hundred leisure boats and more than a hundred boat engines. In time it stretches from Gustav III's gilded sloops of the 18th century to the popular plastic boats of the 1970s. The museum collects boats with broad popular roots, such as the Folkbåt, Pettersson boats, camping boats and canoes, and among the more modern ones are the IF boat, the Albin 25 and the Vega. There are also working boats, for example the rescue boat Hjälparen.
The depot is not a regular exhibition but opens to the public on a few weekends a year. It is run by the Maritime Museum, which belongs to the Statens maritima och transporthistoriska museer (Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums).
