About the museum
The Hembygdsmuseet in Pilhamn, next to Ingarö church, is run by Ingarö Hembygdsförening (local heritage association). The house was built in 1845 as a poorhouse following a decision at the parish meeting (sockenstämma), was rebuilt in 1873 and then became a school. It got its distinctive form from a standard drawing for schoolhouses that was used in many places in the country. Later the building also served as a telephone exchange and post office.
Ingarö's last midwife lived in the house until 1950, and after that the upper floor was rented out as a dwelling. A fire in 1978 damaged the building, but it was renovated. The heritage association has used the lower floor since the 1970s, and since the house was moved in 1992 to make room for the new bridge, the association has had the whole building at its disposal.
On the upper floor are the schoolteacher's room, the midwife's room and a small kitchen with fittings that mostly come from the late 19th century. The museum is part of Kulturplats Pilhamn together with Klockaregården, Kulturladan and Kulturträdgården, and the Kulturstig Pilhamn (culture trail) passes the area.
