About the museum
The boatsman's cottage originally stood on the land of Smedby manor and was moved in the 1880s to Kottlö, near the point where the Smedbybäcken stream flows into Åker Canal. The Österåkers hembygds- och fornminnesförening (Österåker local heritage and ancient monuments association) bought the croft in 1957 and moved it to Ekbacken in Åkersberga, where it was first furnished and used as a homestead museum (hembygdsgård).
When the Vita huset (White House) in Ekbacken took over as the association's homestead museum, the cottage was converted into a boatsman's museum. The museum was opened on 6 June 1992 and shows how a boatsman's family lived in the past. It is run by the local heritage association.
