About the museum
Baddaren (The Bather) is Västerås's new science centre and is located in the bathhouse pavilion at Lögarängen by Lake Mälaren. The building was designed by the architect Nils Tesch and built in the late 1960s as the entrance building to the old open-air bathing place. In 1969 the façade received the artist Per Olof Ultvedt's neon artwork En baddare i badet (A Bather in the Bath), which still shines towards Lake Mälaren every evening and has given the facility its name.
The pavilion was singled out in 2012 as particularly valuable by Västmanlands läns museum (Västmanland County Museum) and stood unused after the new Lögarängsbadet was inaugurated in 2019. Building permission to convert the house into a science centre was granted in 2025, and Baddaren officially opened on 1 July 2026.
The facility was created by the team behind Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje, with Klas Fresk, Ulla Fresk and Lasse Levemark at the head, and comprises about 3,300 square metres of public space. The idea is for visitors to feel the laws of nature with their whole bodies through play and experiments, and new stations are to be added each season.
