About the museum
Tidö slott (Tidö Castle) lies by Lake Mälaren in Rytterne outside Västerås. It was built between 1625 and 1641 by the Councillor of the Realm and Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna, who was guardian to Queen Kristina. The architects were Simon de la Vallée and Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, and the building is in a restrained Dutch Renaissance style with sandstone portals. The Oxenstierna family owned the castle for about two hundred years.
After the sale in 1840, Tidö changed owners several times, until 1890, when Carl-David von Schinkel bought it. The family still owns it, and the castle is a lived-in private home. On the site are also the ruins of the older Oldenburg castle from the late 15th century, but these cannot be visited.
During the summer the main floor is shown on guided tours. The Riddarsalen has inlaid doors, full-length portraits of the Oxenstierna family and an open fireplace dated 1652. The Gula salongen is furnished in Gustavian style, and the Galleriet has stucco and 17th-century paintings. In the stone stable (Stenstallet) a motorcycle museum and a bicycle museum are also shown, which have their own tickets.
