About the museum
Västerås flygmuseum was formed on the initiative of Västerås municipality and the Hässlö airfield. After a meeting in November 1997 the activity began in earnest with the first flying day in May 1999. Several associations at Hässlö joined together, among them Västerås Flygande Museum, F 1 Kamratförening (F 1 Comrades’ Association), Swedish Veteran Wing and Eskilstuna Flygmuseum, and since 2013 the museum has been a single association with a couple of hundred members.
The museum is housed in the CVV hangar, a large wooden structure built for the air force in the 1930s, which is itself a sight. The building is owned by the city, and the association has put much voluntary work into restoring it.
The collection comprises over 25 aircraft, most of them in airworthy condition and many owned by private individuals, along with helicopters, aero engines, instruments and radio equipment. On Sundays aircraft are often in motion. Photo exhibitions tell the history of the hangar and of the F 1 air wing, and one exhibition deals with the American bombers that were stationed at Hässlö in 1943–1945. A special simulator section lets visitors try flying the Draken, Gripen, DC-10 and Airbus A320, among others, and at the entrance there is a shop and a fika service.
